Pursue the Greater Cause

A realistic and truthful action drama, celebrating the life of KOROIBOS, the first Olympic champion in 776 BC. We follow the adventures of Koroibos, from being a baker in Elis to his ultimate triumph.

After a savage wolf attack, which takes the life of his closest friend, Koroibos is called to the city chamber where the elders deliberate as to how they can rid themselves of these beasts. Had Koroibos somehow sacrificed his friend to save himself? Koroibos answered their questions as best he could. The years go by and Koroibos settles into the life of an ordinary man, working with his parents in the bakery and small shop that they have. He experiences the joys and sorrows of an ordinary man.

EUTHALIA, the girl he is expected to marry, goes to Athens due to the mischievous plotting of her aunt. The news comes back that she has been betrothed to a young nobleman there and eventually marries. A few years later, returning home from having been out drinking with friends, Koroibos learns that his father ERASTOS has died. After the death of his father and a subsequent surprise visit by his formidable grandmother PENELOPE, who has had a somewhat estranged relationship with her daughter PHILIS, Koroibos’ mother, we see he continues his usual routine of running every day.

Due to his grandmother’s recognition of his running talents, and manoeuvrings behind the scenes with her former love ARITOBOULOS, who has been appointed as one of the Hellanodikai, an organiser of the upcoming events, Koroibos is amazed when Aritoboulos suggests that he should enter the games. At first, he dismisses it but after talking to his mother, who has also always believed that he was marked for greater things, and spurred on by his grandmother Penelope, he agrees. The big day comes and the whole of Elis celebrates as Koroibos, the baker from Elis, beats the rest of Greece to win the Stadion Race and the laurel crown.
